Nosebleeds – What every ENT wishes patients knew

Every week I have several patients with nosebleeds, or epistaxis as ENT specialists call it. Nosebleeds are caused by drying of the lining of your nose. Under this very thin layer lie many blood vessels. When this tissue dries out and cracks, blood vessels can burst and nosebleeds occur.

To combat nosebleeds – here are a few tips:
1. Keep a humidifier on in your bedroom.
2. Spray your nose with nasal saline frequently.
3. Avoid blowing your nose vigorously.
4. If you are using nasal sprays and have bleeding, see your Ear, nose and throat specialist.
